In this article, we'll give you a basic overview of some of the more common types of ornamental wrought iron so you can know exactly what to look for. If you're not sure exactly what you want, or if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. We'd love to help!
A finial is a decorative top to a fence, bedpost, or other architectural object. From the metal eagle that spreads its wings atop the flagpole on the White House to the little piece that makes your lampshade fit just right, finials are everywhere. At Eagle National Steel, you'll find a huge variety of wrought iron finial designs for your fence or other project. Spears, basket shapes, and even horse heads are a few of the designs you'll find here! Of course, we also have more understated shapes, including iron balls and pyramidal post caps.
3. Balusters & Newels
Picture a banister. Of course, there's the railing itself (the part that's fun to slide down!), but there are also the posts that support the railing. These posts are called balusters, and the supporting posts (which are often larger) are called newels. In addition to their use in banisters, balusters and newels can be used in making other projects like fences. Rather than sticking with plain, straight balusters, you can make your banister or fence more decorative with balusters and newels that contain twists, hammered designs, basket designs, and more. You can even find balusters with elaborate scroll or teardrop shapes! To add even more flair, top the newel with a finial!
2. Decorative Items
There are also plenty of ornamental wrought iron pieces that are designed simply to look good. We have plenty of those at Eagle National Steel, including items that are sure to make any Texan proud! From a longhorn to a Texas star, these are sure to liven up any home, barn, entrance, and otherwise. Or, check out decorative cast iron letters and floral patterns. These are beautiful pieces that are perfect for use in the home.
1. Latches, Hinges, Locks, etc.
Whether you're making a fence, a gate, a banister, or other project that needs ornamental wrought iron, it's important not to forget the items that help hold everything together. Fortunately, you can find many latches, locks, hinges, and handles that match the designs of the ornamental wrought iron, accentuating their look instead of distracting from it.
